Cherie Thiessen has continued to promote her Gulf Island home, illustrating that travel writers don’t have to leave home to make a living, especially when they live in ‘the best place on earth’.   She has stories this month in Boat Journal (Sidney-by-the-Sea), Westworld (Galiano Inn’s mural), two stories in Aqua Magazine (Galiano artist, A.J. Bell, and the farmers’ markets on Mayne and Pender Islands), and Pacific Yachting (A Gulf Islands’ calendar of events.) In addition, the annual issue of the Gulf Islander Magazine features her introductions to Mayne, Saturna, the Penders, and Galiano Islands.

Cherie also writes: “Buzz has been a great way to stay in touch and feel part of an interesting and supportive organization. Thanks so much to the editors for taking this on.  Because it’s so important to me to feel linked to other kindred souls, I am also happy about the new Facebook connection.  If you haven’t done it yet, have a look at our page. It’s one more great way we can keep in touch with one another, post links to our published articles, and find out what we’re all up to. Other travel writers are also invited to contribute and join, so feel free to let colleagues and friends know.  Ruth Kozak has been invaluable in getting this going, so thanks Ruth!”

The Buzz April 2012Hitting the newsstand this month, Jett & Kathryn Britnell’s six page spread, “Havin’ a Swell Time in Alaska” published in Canada’s DIVER Magazine (Volume 137 Number 2), about their Alaskan diving adventure aboard the fabulous diving liveaboard, Nautilus Swell. The Britnell’s are also preparing to present a seminar at the Tacoma Dive & Travel Show in late April entitled, “Shoot Like A Pro – Tips & Tricks to Improve Your Underwater Photography.”

Joei Carlton Hossack had her interview published in the Yuma (Arizona) Sun about three weeks after her book signing at Barnes & Noble and at least  two weeks after she left town but she’s home now and back at work.  Joei is putting up a display of her bookmarks and all nine of her books at the Newton Branch of the Surrey Library on April 1st.  They will be on display from April 1st (no joke folks) until April 30th.  Joei will be doing a reading of one of her stories at the George Mackie Library in Delta on Wednesday, April 4th.  The event is open to all.   Joei at www.joeicarlton.com

Weekly writing goals are helping keep Barb Rees on track and curtail the tendency to take on non paying projects/volunteering. So far, it’s working, and good contacts being made. In between querying for magazine articles, this year she will be working on her 4th RV Canada book for release in 2013 on the next big cross Canada tour.

Barb will be presenting at the annual RV Lifestyle Seminars in Kelowna, June 22-24. Her topics are “Bears, Belugas and Blackberries” and “From Journalling to Generating Income.” It’s a fun and very informative weekend for RVers. Check it out at: www.okanagan.bc.ca

If you’re feeling the need for some quiet time to write and learn, Barb’s “Retreat 2 Write” held May 12 in Powell River may be just the ticket. Event details  listed on Facebook page “LoveToGo Writing.” Contact Barb if accomodation is required separate from the retreat.

From Julie Jenkins at The Tyee: I’d like to invite BC Association of Travel Writers members to attend The Tyee Master Classes. We’re hosting seven weekend workshops in our newsroom this spring across a broad range of media topics — food writing, memoir, photography, journalism, and more.
