About BCATW 2016

The BC Association of Travel Writers hosted 55 of the province’s busiest travel writers and bloggers at BCATW 2016 this April 10 at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster.

This year’s at-capacity turnout proves that travel writers are hungry for a platform to openly exchange ideas, share experiences and empower each other.

The theme for this year’s Symposium was ‘BC – Too Beautiful for Words.’

Held at the sparkling Anvil Centre, the event featured speakers, panel discussions, networking sessions, and a tour of the Centre’s galleries followed by an after party at nearby El Santo Mexican restaurant.

New this year were 5-minute Pitch Sessions which brought travel writers face-to-face with magazine editors – Jennifer Elliott of Vancouver magazine, Brad Liski of My Passion Media, and Anicka Quin of Western Living – for speed dating-style pitch appointments.

Writer Lucas Aykroyd delivered an inspiring and entertaining keynote address, “Crafting Successful Stories – On Your Own Terms,” in the form of Top Ten Tips to impress print and digital editors. His talk is posted in two parts on the BCATW YouTube channel.

A travel industry panel featured Paula Amos from Aboriginal Tourism Association of BC, Heather McEachen of Tourism Vancouver Island, and Laura Kittmer of British Columbia Wine Institute, illuminating BC story-writing possibilities and affording serious networking opportunities.

Travel writers were able to mingle with representatives of symposium sponsors – Graham Nordin of Cedar Creek Estate Wines, Peter Langer and Mahmood Poonja of Bestway Tours, Andy Brown of Tourism Golden, travel dressmaker Peg Steley of Margo Polo, Doug Taylor of Taste Vancouver Food Tours, Yvonne Chiang of Britannia Mines, Janet Clouston of Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce, Shawna Gardham of Wickininnish Inn, and Tiffany Anderson of Forbidden Vancouver Tours – to get ideas about travel stories.

In its 16th year, the BCATW symposium was the largest ever, and this year it attracted more non-members than members of BCATW, including a wider range of bloggers and photographers
