June saw Cherie Thiessen bumping and barging her way through England’s Stratford and Grand Union Canals, on assignment for Pacific Yachting Magazine. Now back, she has dusted off the sailboat and begun to ply Gulf Island waters writing stories for Pacific Yachting, Canadian Yachting and Boat Journal magazines.  The current issue of Boat Journal features her destination Deer Harbor, Orcas Island; her weekender Cortes Island is in the current issue of Westworld, Senior Living Magazine’s July issue has both her Pender Island and her Cycling in the Laurentians stories, and the website www.transitionsabroad.com has now put up her Le P’tit Train de Nord cycling destination as well. Her regular book review column is also seen in B.C. Bookworld. She has decided being a senior in Canada has a lot to recommend it – being paid to travel, sail, write, and read, four of her lifelong passions.

Doris Ecker’s article on Vancouver neighbourhoods, “Vancouver Life”, is published in the 2013-2014 edition of The Essential Vancouver.

At its recent annual Travel Media Awards luncheon during Caribbean Week in Toronto, the Caribbean Tourism Organization honoured Michael DeFreitas with three of its eight awards, including their Best Photograph, Best Feature by a Canadian Journalist in a Foreign Medium and Best of the Best awards. www.iwritetravel.com

Darlene Foster paid a visit to Tomsett Elementary School in Richmond where she read from her novel, Amanda in England-The Perfume Flask and answered questions about her book, travelling and writing from thirty Garde 4 – 5 students. They were so pleased with her presentation they created story boards for her book which included letters to her. One student wrote, “I want to go to Arabia because of your story. I want to see camels, deserts and goats in the trees. Thank you for coming to our class visit. I will never forget this book.” The teacher also had the students draw and colour prayer mats, as well as research the history and use of them. Darlene is happy to be creating future travel writers with her books.

Joei Carlton Hossack has had a busy few months.  In the last six weeks she has attended three RV camping rallies and was either selling her books/bookmarks, doing entertaining travel lectures or both at all the rallies.  She has been invited to lecture at another rally in Hope, BC in September.  In between the rallies she finished her latest Mini Read called Stuck in Greece that is now a print book and an e-book.  She also converted the first essay in Chasing the Lost Dream about her summer of working on three archaeological digs in England call My Life in Ruins into an e-book available through Amazon for the Kindle.  Five e-books are now available and will work towards converting all ten of her books by the end of the summer.  Joei is currently working a fifth Mini Read. www.joeicarlton.com

June brought Julie H. Ferguson a bumper crop of articles published following trips taken in 2013, including the latest that flowed from the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival last December (http://www.travelwithachallenge.com/British-Columbia-Eagle-Watching.html). She attended her first TMAC conference in Saskatoon, which has provided some excellent opportunities for 2014 travel to Belgium, Holland, and PEI as they celebrate centenaries. Julie has just returned from a Sasquatch safari with two researchers who took her deep into the back country east of Harrison Lake. She didn’t see one of the elusive animals but did get the gift of a footprint. Summer for Julie means writing, not travel, as well as escaping on some local photo expeditions. She wishes everyone a creative summer!
