News from Members

Cherie Thiessen has destination features in the current issue of Canadian Yachting (Sidney Island) and Boat Journal (Garrison Bay) as well as a pub roundup in Pacific Yachting.

Julie H. Ferguson has submitted three articles for publication in the next few months, not in itself newsworthy. But one is—BC History is publishing a 2500 word feature and images based on her two trips to Harrison Mills in 2012. She wove the present day visits into the history of the region for an unusual travel piece in a non-travel market that is due in June. Julie is also working on seven more articles that have been assigned and looking forward to delivering two new presentations. One called  Travel Writing is Not All We Do! is for Golden Ears Writers on March 19 and the other, Travel Pix that Pop! has been developed for Vancouver’s University Women’s Club on April 4. Julie wishes to thank Randi for the latter opportunity. After that, she’s off to the southern Okanagan for some R&R and serious photography practice. http://beaconlit.blogspot.com

Ruth Kozak had two stories published in EuropeUpClose, one on Morocco and the other about Venice naval museum. She also had two stories published in Travel Thru History, Visiting Pablo Neruda’s Houses and Worcester England. Ruth edits and publishes Travel Thru History www.travelthruhistory.com and submissions are always welcome. Ruth has been busy teaching various writing classes and will be giving a workshop on travel writing at Douglas College in March for BCATW member Roberta Staley’s journalism class. www.ruthkozak.com

Irene Butler‘s South Korea DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)  article has been published in Robert Scheer’s  “Day Trips Travel Guide” http://daytripstravelguide.com/south-koreas-demilitarized-zone-dmz.html#more-449 A second version of her DMZ visit appeared  in “What Travel Writers Say” http://www.whattravelwriterssay.com/koreadmzbutler.html
Also in “What Travel Writers Say” is her Mt. Sinai story. In this publication a video at the bottom left of the article (titled – Mt. Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery) shows people descending the treacherous 750 steps – which Irene says was a breeze compared to ultimate cardio workout of the ascent, after just completing two hours up winding trails to reach them!  And….is the biblical Mt. Sinai really in Egypt or is it in Saudi Arabia? – the video on bottom right addresses this current controversy.   http://www.whattravelwriterssay.com/mtsinaibutler.html
