BCATW BUZZ – November 2012
Message from the President
So the time has come to plan the next year for the BCATW. If you’d like to be in on the planning, step up and take a role on the board. We always welcome fresh faces and new ideas.
Nominations are open for the board positions of president, communications director, treasurer and director at Large, and voting will take place at the upcoming annual general meeting November 17, 2pm at the VPL downtown branch. Please email me if you would like descriptions of these roles.
We will also be discussing events for next year, including ideas for a spring symposium, educational events and ideas for industry partnerships. Perhaps a social media coordinator?
Please let me know if you are going to attend so I can ensure the room is big enough.
If you are interested in nominating an individual for a specific role, please send me an email by Wednesday, November 7 and I will send them the description of the board position and find out if they are interested. After the nominations close, I will announce the candidates and send around proxy forms for those who can’t make the meeting.
If you are coming to the meeting, please let me know if there are specific topics you’d like to get onto the agenda.

Randi Winter was the lucky winner of a 13 day fam trip for 2 to Northern India in May courtesy of Bestway Tours. She is also the chair of the University Women’s Club special interest group called TRAVEL! and is looking for writers who would like to volunteer and speak there. Meetings are the first Thursday of each month. Darlene Foster is our first BCATW volunteer. Thank you Darlene. www.passionatetravel.com
The month of October for Joei Carlton Hossack ended on a high note at the Surrey International Writers’ Conference. Her sales of books and bookmarks were way up by the end of it and meeting author Vanessa Grant set her on the road to e-publishing. Her first efforts will be to get her Mini Reads (1) How I Lost 3 Pounds in 30 Years of Dieting Without Going Hungry, (2) Down on the Farm and (3) Morocco – Without a Pit to Hiss In into Smashwords. On November 3rd Joei will be participating in an early Christmas craft show at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds and on November 17th she slowly makes her way to California and then Yuma, Arizona where she will be spending the winter. Patti Shales Lefkos had three new articles published this month. Retail Therapy at 3,440 metres in The Globe and Mail, The Annapurna Circuit in Travelife Magazine and Five Places Where Monarchs Rule in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Julie H Ferguson is relaxing in Palm Springs as she writes this update. It’s hot, the breeze shakes the palm leaves, and the golf courses are in perfect shape. After a lean year for travel, she is looking forward to working trips to San Francisco in December and the Middle East in 2013, which had to be postponed last April. Julie’s articles on the Harrison-Agassiz region continue to be published with several more to appear in 2013 and she is working on her photography in the desert light. www.stampsinmypassport.blogspot.com
Darlene Foster had a successful launch of Amanda in England-The Missing Novel at Albany Books in Tsawwassen and would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support in her writing efforts. On November 10, Darlene will be featuring all three of her travel adventure books at the Sublime Christmas Craft Market in Tsawwassen Town Centre from 10:00 am to 4:00 PM. A great time to get a head start on your Christmas shopping. On November 24, she will be signing her books at Black Bond Books in Guildford Town Centre from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Please stop by and say Hello!
Darlene would like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU! to everyone in this amazing organization for their kindness and support while she has been dealing with a broken ankle: Karoline, Joei, Ruth, Chris, Jett, Kathryn, Irene, to name a few. Another great reason to belong to a group of like minded individuals. www.darlenefoster.ca
The current issue of Around The Pacific Northwest Magazine has published Jett and Kathryn Britnell’s shipwreck story and images about the tragic sinking of Princess Sophia on October 24, 1918. This incident still ranks as the worst maritime disasters in Alaska’s history.
“The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” Samuel Johnson
