Greetings from BCATW President, Ruth Kozak. Wishing you all an adveturous and exciting summer with opportunities to gather lots more travel stories.
Ruth recently won third prize in an RCLAS contest for her non-fiction travel tale “Firedancing” about the fire dancers of Langada, Greece. One of those trips that went wrong but had a positive outcome anyway!
Ridge Mountain Range Tour and Craft Beer Tour
On May 19th I landed in Taipei for a wonderful tour of Taipei and North East Taiwan – sponsored by Taiwan Tourism. The 5 am arrival left me with a whole morning to settle in at the 5-star Regent Hotel and refuel at one of the best buffets in Taipei. Being Sunday morning, it quickly filed up tourist and locals. It had every kind of food you could imagine. In the early afternoon I met host guide and other guest for our 6 day tour. The first day was spent exploring Taipei 101 and having an incredible delicious dumpling dinner. The next day we headed out to the north coast in a thunderstorm that lasted most of the day. Our hiking was cut short, but we did get to see all the highlights. The weather was much better the next day and we hike up a through a historic Lion mountain pass. We stayed at hot spring hotels and climbed twisting hairpin roadways to stay in misty mountain inns in the coastal rain forest. On the second part of my trip I went solo to explore the craft beer industry in Taiwan. Visiting up to 4 craft beer destinations a day kept me very busy for the final four days. There was even a whiskey distillery thrown in. Hotels and food were 5 star throughout my tour, with Taiwan Tourism taking care of all details, to make it a very successful and memorable tour.
